Nature in Britain: Diana Maclean for Swaine

Diana's Compact Wallet - Jaguar Green - Swaine Group Ltd

At Swaine, we have always believed that something beautifully made deserves to be kept, used and enjoyed. Occasionally, however, a piece takes a slightly different route. When something is crafted entirely by hand, the process is, naturally, a very human affair. Our artisans take great pride in their work, particularly in selecting and working with the highest quality leathers for our clients.

Occasionally, a piece may acquire a small scratch along the way. Others may carry a chapter of Swaine’s history through a discontinued lining, heritage detail, or piece of hardware. Ordinarily, these pieces would find their place in our archive instead, working with Diana, we have chosen to give these exceptional pieces a second life. They may not belong to our main collection, but each carries its own character, craftsmanship, and story, making them an opportunity to own something with a little more history behind it.

Scottish born Diana draws inspiration from nature, historic paintings and Britain’s rich decorative traditions. Her work celebrates the botanical world, with flowers, foliage and woodland creatures winding their way across the leather.

Different shapes and sizes allow Diana’s illustrations to take on a character of their own, making each creation entirely individual. It is a meeting of two crafts, where Swaine leatherwork becomes the starting point for an entirely new story.

This is not the first time Swaine has taken a circular approach to its leather goods. For generations, the house has cherished pieces from its past, encouraging clients to return well travelled bags to our craftspeople for repair and restoration rather than replace them. It is a philosophy that remains at the heart of Swaine today. Fine craftsmanship is intended to last, gathering character as the years pass and, when necessary, returning to the hands of our artisans for a little attention.

These pieces will be released at intervals throughout the year, appearing across a changing selection of Swaine designs. Each is entirely singular: one piece, painted by hand, with no second edition waiting in the wings.

Newsletter subscribers will be given the first opportunity to discover each new arrival with a unique purchasing link before it takes its place on the Swaine website. After that, it will be available more widely, assuming, of course, someone has not already taken rather a liking to it.

The Swaine Story Behind Mary Poppins

Blending live action with animation, the film became an immediate British favourite bringing in 103 million at the box office and, much like a spoonful of sugar, has gone down rather well ever since.
