Swaine's Walking Sticks & Canes

Until 1825 Swaine & Isaac exclusively retailed whips, there was no sign of the walking sticks that Swaine would be selling by the middle of the century.
Pre-railway era, the whip market had a much wider scope and market opportunities than canes and walking sticks.

One of the earliest features of a cane with affiliation to the royals has been noted is a stick Queen Victoria bought for Prince Albert on his 26th birthday. It was a walking stick of Malacca cane with a knob of carved coral mounted on a silver collar. As such, historians have identified that at least by 1845 Swaine & Isaac had branched into canes and walking sticks.
1848-1910
Swaine & Adeney
Under Edward Swaine and James Adeney, Swaine & Adeney won a prize medal in the exhibition's for ‘a large assortment of whips and canes, showing much taste in the manufacture, and superiority in the workmanship. Whips and walking sticks were not ordinarily objects of glamour, but by investing in these splendid mounts Swaine & Adeney forced the press to pay attention to their displays.
