The Custodian of Craft: Ian Harding

Within Swaine, Ian Harding is nothing short of legendary, so much a fixture of Swaine that he’s often mistaken for part of the furniture (albeit the best-dressed piece).

With his impeccably waxed moustache, dapper tailoring, and unmistakable confidence, Ian looks every inch the seasoned craftsman he is. This year, his inclusion on the Walpole 2026 Power List felt less like a surprise and more of a formal recognition of a career defined by dedication, artistry, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.

Ian has been a hatter for over 30 years, collaborating closely with Herbert Johnson throughout his career. Over the past 15 years, he has served as head of military and traditional headwear, witnessing firsthand the brand’s evolution, its growth, its challenges, and the preservation of its enduring identity. Ian hasn’t just watched the story of Swaine unfold; he has been a core part of writing it.

Today, Ian leads a small, highly skilled team of artisans responsible for creating military headwear, alongside curating and designing some of Herbert Johnson’s most treasured traditional styles. His role sits at the intersection of heritage and innovation, preserving time-honoured techniques while ensuring each piece meets the expectations of more modern clientele. If there’s ever any doubt about which hat belongs at the races, a wedding, or any other traditional occasion, the answer is simple: ask Ian.

But Ian’s journey began not in leadership, but at the workbench, and today, while he leads the team, he remains firmly at it.

Coming from a long line of hardworking craftsmen and women, Ian studied art direction. He then began his career as an apprentice couturier, where his impeccable stitching, steady hand, and innate eye for beauty quickly set him apart. Those early years shaped his deep respect for craft, detail, and hardwork values that still underpin everything he does. Even now, his standards are uncompromising, his knowledge encyclopaedic, and his passion unmistakable.

Ask anyone who has worked alongside Ian, and they will tell you the same thing: his influence extends far beyond the products themselves. He is a mentor, the ultimate guardian of heritage, and a living embodiment of British craftsmanship. His recognition on the Walpole Power List is not just a personal achievement, but a celebration of the future of craft itself.

At Swaine, we are proud to celebrate Ian Harding: a master of his craft, a leader by example, and a cornerstone of our heritage.
