Born into motion: The year of the horse

As Chinese New Year ushers in the Year of the Fire Horse, it offers a moment to reflect with pride on the brand’s beginnings 275 years ago in the year of the Metal Horse. This is a story of making things well, and of making them to last.
Equestrian Roots
Horses have always held a place of reverence at the heart of Swaine. As a British brand trading for over 275 years, it is only natural that our roots lie in equestrian craftsmanship, founded on the making of saddles and whips for riders. Our history is tied to the idea of the journey, with each generation taking the reins firmly in hand and honouring the legacy that has brought us into the 21st century.
The zodiac calendar is not simply a way of marking time. Guided by the lunar cycle, it reflects the belief that time has character, and that each year arrives with its own temperament, shaped by nature rather than numbers. It feels only right, then, that the horse steps forward again. Not as decoration, but as influence, shaping how fashion moves with the body and how it carries its weight.
To mark the turning of the year, Swaine has created a small collection of limited pieces. Each has been carefully designed to carry intention.
Limited Edition Money Envelope
The red envelope (红包 hóngbāo), has been passed down through generations in China as a gesture of protection, goodwill, and prosperity. Given with care, it is less about what is inside and more about the wish it carries. Swaine’s interpretation draws on this spirit, offering a considered object that honours the power of tradition and giving.
Limited Edition Oak Umbrella with Tassel
Umbrellas (伞 sǎn) have long held a place in Chinese New Year celebrations, admired for their elegance and sense of shelter. Swaine’s red parasol brings this symbol into dialogue with the house’s own heritage. It is an object that stands gracefully, offering shelter and continuity, a reminder that craftsmanship, like tradition, is something to be carried forward.
As the new year begins Swaine wishes prosperity to all who celebrate. In the spirit of the Horse, may the year unfold with strength, balance and quiet momentum.
